MATERIALS:

PROCEDURE:

  1. To cover the frame: Carefully separate the frame front, back and stand. Cut a 7" square of paisley fabric and lay it face down. Center the frame back face down on the fabric and fold in the corners (diagram 1). Glue to secure, then fold in and glue the sides. Cut a 5" moire square and glue to cover the raw edges. Cut a 4" paisley square. Wrap it around the stand and glue to secure; trim the top and bottom edges. Reglue the stand to the back.

  2. Cut a 7" paisley square, lay it face down and center the batting on it. Lay the frame front face down on the batting and cover with fabric as in step 1, pulling the edges smooth and taut over the batting. Cut the batting even with the inner frame edge. Cut away the fabric 1/2" inside the opening, then clip the inner edge almost to the mat. Pull the tabs to the back and glue, working alternately on the left side, right side, top and bottom (diagram 2) until all the tabs are glued. Be careful to keep the fabric smooth on the frame face. Glue the front to the back, leaving open at the top.
  3. To make a yo-yo: Cut a 4" circle of moire fabric. Sew a running stitch 1/4" inside the edge and pull to gather tightly, turning in the raw edges. Knot the thread and trim excess. Repeat for two more green yo-yos. Glue a gold button to the center of each yo-yo, covering the stitching. Glue the yo-yos to the lower left corner of the frame. Glue the buttons and ribbon roses as shown in the photo.

MATERIALS:

PROCEDURE:

  1. From paisley fabric cut three 6" and two 4" circles. Follow the directions in step 3 above to make yo-yos from the paisley and white circles. Face: Use the beige circle. Sew as for a yo-yo, but insert the fiberfill before drawing up the threads. Sew the opening closed. Refer to the pattern above to draw features on the smooth side; blush the cheeks.
  2. For each leg: Fold a wire length in half and insert the ends through the holes of a 5/8" button. Repeat to thread on another 5/8", four 1/2" white, a 1/2" burgundy and five 1/2" white buttons. Twist the wire for 1/2" at the top to secure; trim excess. Use the wire cutters to cut the shank off a green shank button and glue it for a foot. For the arms: Make as for the legs, but use a 3/8" burgundy, three 3/8" white, and five 1/2" white for each arm and a burgundy shank buton for each hand. .
  3. Assembly: Thread the sculpting needle with doubled thread. Hold the white yo-yo flat side down and insert the needle through the center. Repeat with the large paisley yo-yos, then the small yo-yos. Insert through the head, bottom to top.
  4. Reinsert through the head and all layers, 1/16" away. Sew the leg wires to the bottom of the white yo yo; trim the thread. Glue the arm wires between the top two yo-yos. Glue the rose in front of the chin. Hair: Cut a 6", yarn length and set aside. Wrap the remaining yarn 15 times around your hand, slide off and tie the center with the 6" length. Glue to the top of the doll's head. Glue the remaining green button to the top of the head. Cut the shank off the last button and glue over the green button.

  2. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to cover the foam heart with fabric. Glue to the lid. Use the ribbon to make a shoestring bow with 1" loops and 1 1/2" tails; glue to the center top of the heart.
