MATERIALS:
- BR36 burgundy buttons: four 3/8", one 1/2"
- yard of rose/green/cream paisley print fabric
- 5" square of polyester batting
- scissors, needle and strong green thread
- one 5" square cardboard frame with 3 1/2" wide
heart opening
- GL18 gold buttons: three 3/4"
- 1/4 yard of green moire taffeta
- five 3/8" wide burgundy ribbon roses
- tacky craft glue or glue gun and sticks
PROCEDURE:
- To cover the frame: Carefully separate the frame
front, back and stand. Cut a 7" square of paisley
fabric and lay it face down. Center the frame back face
down on the fabric and fold in the corners (diagram 1).
Glue to secure, then fold in and glue the sides. Cut a
5" moire square and glue to cover the raw edges. Cut
a 4" paisley square. Wrap it around the stand and
glue to secure; trim the top and bottom edges. Reglue the
stand to the back.
- Cut a 7" paisley square, lay it face down and center
the batting on it. Lay the frame front face down on the
batting and cover with fabric as in step 1, pulling the
edges smooth and taut over the batting. Cut the batting
even with the inner frame edge. Cut away the fabric
1/2" inside the opening, then clip the inner edge
almost to the mat. Pull the tabs to the back and glue,
working alternately on the left side, right side, top and
bottom (diagram 2) until all the tabs are glued. Be
careful to keep the fabric smooth on the frame face. Glue
the front to the back, leaving open at the top.
- To make a yo-yo: Cut a 4" circle of moire
fabric. Sew a running stitch 1/4" inside the edge
and pull to gather tightly, turning in the raw edges.
Knot the thread and trim excess. Repeat for two more
green yo-yos. Glue a gold button to the center of each
yo-yo, covering the stitching. Glue the yo-yos to the
lower left corner of the frame. Glue the buttons and
ribbon roses as shown in the photo.
